En 1996, con motivo del I Centenario de las Fiestas Patronales de Aduanas del Mar (Puerto de Xàbia), el Club de Ajedrez Xàbia propuso a la Comissió de Festes Mare de Déu de Loreto, organizar un ajedrez viviente en el marco de los numerosos actos programados para ese año tan especial. Fue tal el éxito de público y medios de comunicación que se decidió continuar con la iniciativa. Desde la primera edición el director del evento es Rafael Andarias. El Ajedrez Viviente de Xàbia cuenta con la colaboración de las Concejalías de Cultura, Deportes, Fiestas y Turismo del Muy Ilustre Ayuntamiento de Xàbia, Club de Ajedrez Xàbia y Caja de Ahorros del Mediterráneo (CAM).

Javea town hall has finalised the documents necessary to declare live chess an international tourist attraction. A general consensus is indispensable to get this distinction. This was passed in the last general meeting, when all parties voted in favour. The town hall sent all the information required (approval certificate by the general meeting, explanation documents of the activity and press cuttings of each international event where they have performed) to the Valencia Tourist Agency.
